[SEO 101] Topic 1: Introduction to SEO (III)

How Do Search Engines Work

Figuring out how Search Engine works makes it a lot easier to rank one’s website in organic search results for relevant and popular keywords. And ranking high for these queries is a ticket to increased clicks and traffic to the website. In general, a search engine works as follows. From backlinks, sitemaps, and URL submissions, search engine discovers new URLs. Search engine queues URLs for crawling, i.e. visiting and downloading discovered websites, based on a list of factors. To name a few, how often the URL changes and whether or not it is new. Search engine renders crawled websites, extracts key information such as links, and stores content for indexing later on. Search engine adds processed information from crawled websites to a big database called the search index, where users search for matching results as they type a query.

Search Engine Algorithm

Search engine algorithm looks at a wide range of factors, including the words of query, relevance and usability of pages, expertise of sources, locations, settings, etc when ranking websites. The weight put to each factor varies depending on the nature of the query. The search engine algorithm determines the value of a website by the quantity and quality of backlinks pointing to it, and backlinks from relevant and high-authority websites are considered the best ones. Guess what! The more quality backlinks, the better!

Domain Authority, otherwise known as Domain Rating (DR), is an interesting factor worth mentioning. It measures the relative strength of a website’s backlink profile (in terms of both size and quality) compared to others in their index and takes into account mainly three components – the number of websites linked to yours, the DR score of linking domains, and the number of sites each referring domain links to. Work with our professional SEO team at New iMedia, we create content that others want to link to, pitch relevant and authoritative websites, leverage internal linking to improve the authority of important pages, etc., and in turn place your business at the forefront of the field.

As search engines aim to rank the most useful and reliable results for their users, they expect excellent Content Quality. Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness are considered when it comes to assessing Content Quality. Expertise is about being knowledgeable and skillful in a particular field. Search engine primarily looks for content created by experts of the subject matter, and this is especially important when it comes to anything medical, financial and legal. Authority is about having a reputation among other experts in the industry. Search engine generally looks at reviews, references, and recommendations about the website provided by credible sources. Trustworthiness is about being legitimate, transparent, and accurate about the website itself as well as its content. One way to evaluate trustworthiness is to see whether the party responsible for the published content is mentioned on the website.

Keyword Relevance is of pivotal importance as well. Search engine looks for websites containing the same keyword as the query and uses interaction data to assess whether search results are relevant to said query. And that explains why finding the perfect list of keywords to be featured on your website matters.

Page Speed is one pretty straightforward factor. It means either “page load time” (the time it takes to display all content on a page), or “time to first byte” (the time it takes for a page to start loading). Since search engines do not want to keep users waiting and negatively affect user experience, pages need to load fast to rank high. SEO aside, pages with long load time subject to high bounce rates and less time spent on them, ultimately affecting conversions. Simply put, High Page Speed is indispensable one way or another. Here at New iMedia, our team of professionals adopts SEO best practices to efficiently improve the page speed of your website. Among others, we optimize images, compress codes, upgrade hosting, reduce redirects, and activate browser caching.
